National Military Services (VFW Support)

The VFW provides numerous services to military service members and their families.

The three main efforts of the VFW Military Services department are:

  • the Military Assistance Program (MAP),

  • Operation Uplink, and

  • Unmet Needs.

Each program has a focus of support:

  • MAP has helped fund Farewell and Welcome Home gatherings for military units worldwide.

  • Operation Uplink provides free, pre-paid phone cards to service members.

  • Unmet Needs can give a one-time grant up to $2,500 for qualifying service members and their families experiencing financial hardship.

    History:

The founders of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW placed the greatest emphasis on a program developed to assist veterans returning from battle and assimilating back into to civilian life. Today the organization continues to help those coming directly from the battlefield or from the hospital as they try to re-establish themselves and maintain normal, happy lives with their families and their communities.

One of the most successful projects under this program is Operation Uplink. VFW and Ladies Auxiliary members across the country raise money to purchase long-distance telephone cards for veterans and overseas soldiers. Thousands of cards go to deploying units to Iraq, into care packages and to VA Medical Centers to help heroes call home. www.operationuplink.org

For the third year, the Ladies Auxiliary VFW will be offering four Continuing Education Scholarships in each Membership Conference. Members, their spouses and their children are eligible for one of four $1,000 scholarships. Print out an application here.
